How to Get from Hanoi to Cat Ba Island

The route runs Hanoi → Hai Phong by road (around 120 km, roughly 1.5–2 hours), then a sea crossing from the mainland to Cat Ba Island, followed by a further drive to reach Cat Ba town. The road from the ferry landing into Cat Ba town is itself very scenic — about 20 km along the coast, so even the "last leg" of the trip is part of the experience, not just a transfer.

Option 1 — Private car all the way, via vehicle ferry.

Your car (with you inside) boards the vehicle ferry from the mainland (Dong Ba Ferry, Hai Phong) and crosses directly to the island — no need to change vehicles or carry your luggage at all. The ferry ticket itself is cheap (around 16,000 VND/person), but vehicle space on the ferry is limited: in peak season, passengers go through quickly while vehicles can wait 3–4 hours for space on board. This option costs more for the car portion, but is the most comfortable — you never touch your own luggage.

Option 2 — Shuttle car + passenger ferry. 

Your car takes you to the mainland ferry pier, where you switch to a passenger-only ferry (faster, no vehicle queue) and a shuttle car picks you up on the Cat Ba side to continue to your hotel. This is significantly cheaper than Option 1 — around 600,000–700,000 VND less, since you're not paying for a vehicle ferry slot — but you'll need to carry your own luggage on and off the ferry yourself.

Option 3 — High-speed boat, direct to Cat Ba town center. 

A speedboat runs directly from the mainland to the island center, skipping the car-ferry crossing and the shuttle car on the other side entirely. It's the fastest option door-to-door, with tickets around 200,000 VND/person. You'll carry your own bags on board.

Option 4 — Cat Ba Cable Car.

Instead of traveling by boat or ferry, you can take the cable car—an experience that offers stunning views rather than serving merely as a mode of transport. It is an ideal choice for travelers who want to enjoy the scenery while also traveling faster than the ferry. However, there are downsides: luggage size is limited, and there are few trips per day.

Upon arriving on the island, passengers still need to arrange a transfer vehicle to reach Cat Ba Town.
